Notes: A large, heavy candlestick with a diagonal slash of figure maple in a stave top of purpleheart. The twist is masur birch from Scandinavia. The masur birch pattern, usually appearing in silver or downy birch, was originally thought to be due to a beetle infestation but has since been discovered to be a genetic defect.
A Norwegian woodworker told me that the best masur birch is harvested and allowed to "season" by sinking it in a pond over the winter under the ice. In any case, the birch with the masur pattern is highly prized and, consequently, very expensive.
This candlestick also features a segmented base with 24, 48, and
8 part rings. The 8 part rings are composed of two woods that form and arc. See if you can figure
out how the curves in the wood
were made.
